Pulmonary Hypertension

Suggested meta description: Evaluation and management of pulmonary hypertension in Westminster, CA with Dr. Mahmoud Abdallah, pulmonary and critical care specialist.

Pulmonary Hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension is high blood pressure specifically in the arteries of the lungs, which forces the heart to work harder to pump blood through the lungs. Left unmanaged, it can lead to strain on the heart over time.

Common symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath, particularly with exertion

  • Fatigue

  • Swelling in the legs or ankles

  • Chest discomfort or lightheadedness in more advanced cases

How it's evaluated and managed: Pulmonary hypertension can develop as a result of several different underlying conditions — including lung disease, heart disease, or blood clots — so identifying the underlying cause is a key part of evaluation. Dr. Abdallah coordinates the appropriate testing, which may include echocardiography and other specialized studies, to determine the type and severity of pulmonary hypertension, and develops a management plan aimed at reducing symptoms and protecting heart and lung function over time.
